About Athens

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is located in Athens, approximately three miles from UGA.  The 313 acre garden and nature preserve is a favorite location for taking a relaxing walk or hike while enjoying the extensive and beautiful gardens and plant collections.  The Botanical Garden is also a popular location for weddings and other events.  Admission is free, and a visit is highly recommended!

Although the city of Athens was incorporated in 1806 - nearly 200 years ago - it was predated by The University of Georgia, which opened for classes in 1801.  UGA permeates the culture of Athens, as a first-time visitor will quickly see from the proliferous use of the school's colors: red and black.  Today, UGA is a nationally recognized research institution and posesses the 19th largest library in the nation.  It is little surprise that many young people in Athens opt to become 'dawgs' when they graduate high school.
